“You’ll stay with me?”
As the life took a head start, two lives became seemingly one. Promises were kept and broken. Smiles were shared and lost. Words were said and silenced. But life sailed on. In the separate worlds, two lives had become one. She dropped her head on His knees, the eyelids closed. As he fancied her asleep, She gently opened her eyes in which appeared the somber profundity of love and separation. She said to him in a tone whose sweetness seemed already to proceed from another world :-
“And by the way, Monsieur, I believe that I was genuinely in love with you.”
The conversation last night, was to have its imprints on the days to come. The last few words came in as a sharp weapon, trying to cut through the heart and see if love exists.
I will not try to convince you to love me, to respect me, to commit to me. I deserve better than that; I AM BETTER THAN THAT…bye.”
As the phones hung up, the mighty doors that allowed the escape to each other’s world closed too. But not forever.
“You may not be proud of the love that i had bestowed on you, but i feel proud of your love for me.” Said the heart on one side of the world. “You have changed” whispered another.
Every meeting led to a parting but in everything parting there was some of the joy of meeting as well. What happened that night, nobody knows. It was a confidential matter between the two hearts and we are no one to interfere.
They stood there, looking at each other, saying nothing. But it was the kind of nothing that meant everything. In His eyes, there was no trace of what had happened between them earlier and they could feel something inside them break.
“No more words.”
“Here is to the nights we felt alive, here is to the tears you knew you’d cry, here is to the good of us, tomorrow shall come soon…Goodbye” -their last spoken words.
The letter in her study read :
I am leaving, but I am living. I will not be gone from you entirely. When you fight now, I will be still by you. When you walk in the world, I will be the light at your side.Every moment was a precious thing, having in it the essence of finality. Goodbye. Just tonight. Not forever.
As the silenced room got filled with a strange chaos of sounds and shrills, the last words in the letter read: “Falling for you…Again!”
Under a tree, she wrote her story.
A soft voice came over and kissed her cheek. She had many amazing things to say.Her little hands stretched to embrace her. The horrific moments of that last night (years back) disappeared. But it still felt like a goodbye rather than a ‘see ya.’ The thing was, She didn’t cry. She didn’t know what she felt.
Finally, He climbed into her pickup. The wheels rolled on. And a great song was playing. And everyone smiled. Including Her. But She wasn’t there anymore.
The tree smiled knowing that there is life after death and Love never dies
They kept their promise. They stayed with each other. Forever!
